DIR Diving

KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid
I’ve been reading a lot on DIR (Doing-It-Right) diving recently. Basically it is a set of philosophies and techniques developed and popularized by a group of technical cave divers. It calls for a minimalist approach on equipment configuration and emphasizes on proper dive skills and safety practices.
Like most recreational divers, I started out by going for the PADI open water diving course. While it did a good job of introducing the basics of diving, I find that some of the stuffs taught by the PADI course is much less efficient and possibly outdated when compared to the DIR diving techniques.
So far, in my few dives with the local dive center, I have not seen any awareness of DIR diving with the recreational divers there. Even the instructor didn’t know much about it. Hopefully more local divers will find the DIR practices appealing and adopt it.
I think I’ll be giving DIR diving a shot. It is, after all, the next logical step to becoming a better diver.
