I had the chance of visiting one of the islands off the coast of Kota Kinabalu during my trip to Sabah earlier this month.

We visited Mamutik Island, which is part of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. Mamutik is the smallest island in the park. The other more popular island is Manukan Island, which is bigger and more frequented by tourist.

Despite being relatively small, Mamutik does have some good beaches and coral reefs. I did some snorkeling there and I was pretty impressed by the abundant aquatic life in the reefs.

There was a dive center on the island but unfortunately I did not have a diving license, but that’s about to change. I enrolled for a diving course with a local dive center and so far I have already finished the boring part of the course where you have to sit through watching PADI instructional video and then review it with the instructor.

And the interesting part is coming soon, I will be doing some confined water diving at the swimming pool to learn the basics of handling scuba equipments. After that, it will be on to diving in open waters and subsequently receiving my PADI diving license. I can’t wait!

I think I will definitely be going back to Sabah in the near future. This time it will be to dive rather than just snorkeling.
